End of Summer Mermaid Nails

Updated: Dec 24, 2023

This is the last month of summer which may be a good or bad thing depending on how this year has treated you. To celebrate, I want to show you how to make these gorgeous Mermaid themed nails. Whether you’re braving the beach or enjoying a drink in your pool or bathtub, these nails are bound to answer the ocean’s call.

Okay, I’m going to be honest, I’ve worn these nails for the last three weeks. Whenever I go to redo my nails, I just can’t get enough of this design so I just reapply it.

Disney’s Little Mermaid was my absolute favorite movie when I was little and while other little girls wanted to be ballerinas or princesses, I just wanted to be a mermaid. Back in the late 80’s early 90’s they didn’t really have mermaid themed bedroom sets for kids as they do now, and my poor mother was afraid that my room was going to look like the bathroom section of a Target so I had to get creative with how I decorated to honor the mermaid theme. I gathered shells whenever I could which wasn’t hard to do in Florida. I also had this MASSIVE under the sea coloring poster that I patiently colored for hours and hung. For a while, I really considered being an oceanographer, but was thwarted by my parents who really wanted me to be a doctor and not relying on government grants to pay my bills (jokes on them though because I still didn’t become a doctor). Had these nails been an option when I was a child it would have been all I wore. Now as an adult, I’m free to live out my mermaid dreams and these nails really do it for me.

O.P.I Ridge Filler

O.P.I March in Uniform (or any other dark blue polish)

Revlon Chroma Chameleon (in Topaz) However, if you can’t find this any greenish shiny polish will work as these will be your scales!\

1.) As always with my nail tutorials, remove any old polish, file, and shape as you would like remembering to push the cuticles back. Then Apply O.P.I Ridge Filler to the nail so that the polish goes on nice and smooth.

2.) Next, paint all the nails with the Revlon Chroma Chameleon (or whatever you’d like your scales to be).

3.) Once that is dry use the MoYou London “Sailor” plate (#19) and pick a fun saying you want to have on your nails. I chose “Free like the Sea”, but any of these are good. Using your MoYou London Crystal Clear Nail stamper and deep blue O.P.I polish in “March in Uniform” pick up the design you want and put it on whatever finger you want your accent nail to be.

4.) Now that you know which nail is your accent nail, get the “Sailor” plate in (#05) and use the O.P.I “March in Uniform” and paint it over the Scales design. Pick it up with your stamper and start putting it on the other nails.

5.) After everything is done be sure to paint it with a clear topcoat to protect your design. AND YOU’RE DONE! Now you can show off your mermaid spirit!

If you’re missing the Ridge Filler and the Topcoat, don’t worry, so long as you have two colors you think would look good together (preferably light and dark colors) this should work out just fine. The ocean reminds me that everything changes. The tides, the waves, even the sand. No matter what you’re going through today, there’s always a chance for it to get better. I hope you have a wonderful day and make sure to get in some ocean time, even if that means filling up a kiddy pool, or your bathtub! -Heather Astaneh
