My Top Ten Summer Self Care Tips

I’m one of those people who likes to have the house all open when it’s like 90 degrees out. For me, I know that I have at least 6 months of cool to frigidly cold weather waiting for me once fall starts, so I try to drink in as much of the heat as I can when it’s available. It also helps lift my mood considerably when it’s warm out.

My Self Care List is completely different from Winter to Summer. So here are my absolute must-haves to spoil myself. Make some Spa Water!: Water all by itself can be pretty boring. However, I noticed that when I make a ritual of it by adding fruit and making it look appealing, I’m more likely to drink it. Also, I’ve recently bought one of these reusable water bottles. Having a brightly colored bottle near me always reminds me to have a drink.

Go Out and Bring Your Camera!: I’ve found that having an Instagram account has really helped me look for interesting or fun things to photography. It’s also motivated me to get out more and explore where I live. Who knows, you might find that photography is your new hobby!

Workout Outside!: In Massachusetts, we can have chilly weather for six months out of the year. So the second the weather starts to warm up, everyone is out of their homes. Spring is also a time when people are trying to lose weight, so instead of going to a gym to run on a treadmill, try running, yoga, or even canoeing outside. Make it even more fun by tracking your steps or activities with a fitness tracker!

Embrace some Summer Time Foods!: When I think of the summer, I think of smoothies, seafood, and fruit, and so it’s no surprise that I eat those things from the first warm day on. Take a look at your diet and ask yourself if that’s what your ideal self would like to eat this summer, even adding something small like a side salad or fruit cup to your meals can make a big difference! Create a Summertime Spa Routine!: You don’t need to go to a spa to have the spa experience. You can check out my two summertime nail tutorials HERE and HERE. But there are also tons of ideas for scrubs, lotions, soaps, and even bath bombs! However, if you want to save time you can always buy some facemasks. My favorite one is shown below!

Start a Journal!: You are only going to be young once. This summer is going to be the only one of it’s kind, at your age. Yes, more summers are coming, but you’ll be one year older, the circumstances will be different, so why not record your thoughts for this summer? It’s a good way to see what makes you tick, what makes you happy, sad and how you deal with your thoughts and emotions.

Clean up a Beach or River!: There is nothing sadder than going to a beach, lake, or river only to see garbage being pushed around by the water, or cigarette butts in the sand. You can either join a meetup or club with the focus on cleaning up these spots or just head out on your own armed with a trash bag, gloves, and a Trash Picker. No matter how you go about it, you can feel good knowing you helped clean up part of the world.

Do some Summer Reading: One of the best (and cheapest) things you can do to invest in your mental health. Reading is an easy way to expand how you think and get another perspective on life. There are tons of fantastic reading lists that can be found on Pinterest (Check out my own Reading List Board for ideas). Or you can hit up your local library. One book I’m currently reading this summer is called “The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You’re Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are” by Brene Brown. You are in complete control of what you put into your mind, make sure it’s good stuff! 🙂

Summer Time Shopping Spree!: I use to have a TON of summer clothes in Florida. Every day was summer. But up here in Massachusetts that can often get pushed aside and things like sweaters start taking over my closet. Tastes change too and it’s good to ask yourself if the stuff from two years ago still makes you happy when you wear it. If not, it’s time to either get rid of it or donate those outfits. If you’re looking for a cheap place to get some replacement clothes, I suggest going to Primark (a favorite place for me to shop). The clothes are cheap and wear pretty well for the most part. Also, don’t forget to look at some online clothing stores. There are some absolutely awesome things out there if you’d just take a look. It’s amazing how one new shirt or dress can make you feel!

Start a Blog or Business!: WOW! Yeah, I know, that’s like a huge jump, but I can’t tell you how many summers I would get up and drag myself to work on a day where I would have LOVED to work from home or at a coffee shop. Learning about this part of my personality made me start to think of what I would do if I “didn’t need a job”. The truth is, I’ve always loved writing and art in practically all of its forms, so blogging allows me to do both. If you had all the time and money in the world, consider what would make you excited to get up and do every day, and then think of how you can make that happen! You might be surprised at what you can accomplish!
